Survey!
Please complete the DSSI survey to let us know how we did! We want to know what worked well, and what we could do better, so when we do this again next summer we can keep the good parts and improve the so-so parts. THANK YOU for being here all week!
Pre-workshop Announcement
Please visit https://demohub.ncssm.edu and sign up for an account. We’ll use this tool a bit this week, and having an account set up ahead of time will be very helpful!

- Title: DIY Lesson Design: Making the Data Science Classroom your Own (Day 1)
- When designing a data science lesson the first thing you need is … data. At the start of this session, participants will be given tips on where to find data sets and how to prepare them to be used in lessons. After choosing a data set, you’ll work with other participants to create a data story that you’ll use to design tasks and make up questions for students to answer. Finally, you’ll be guided through the process of developing a Jupyter notebook for your lesson.

- Title: Incorporating Data Science into your Classroom
- Want to engage students with real data to build statistical reasoning and data science skills? Come learn what data scientists do and what processes and dispositions can be developed. Bring your laptop to investigate multivariate, messy data using a data investigation process and a free data visualization and analysis tool (CODAP). A free, online professional learning platform (InSTEP) to develop teachers’ expertise in teaching data science and statistics will be shared, along with classroom resources.

- Title: Drawing students into STEM through the analytics of sports
- For many students, the term “data science” is not familiar. As such, the School of Data Science at UNC Charlotte is developing concepts and programs to “meet students in their interests.” One of these is where there is a subset of students that are very interested in sports. Using and analyzing data from sports has engaged students and brought data science into their college and career lexicon. This presentation will discuss projects, programs and methods that have been piloted as well as the early success and learnings from each.

- Title: Empowering the Next Generation: Communicating the Value of Data Science Education to Students, Administration, and Communities
- In this session, we will dive into the world of data science education and its impact on K-12 classrooms. By effectively conveying the value of data literacy and analytical skills, we can equip students to become future innovators and problem solvers in our rapidly evolving world. We will explore strategies for effective messaging and communication, ensuring that school administration and communities understand the significance of data science education. Furthermore, we will discuss ways to engage families in supporting this transformative initiative, fostering a collaborative environment. By leveraging the power of data science education, we can collectively nurture a culture of data-driven decision-making, empowering students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
